What Makes a Good Management Dashboard?

A dashboard isn't valuable because it looks attractive.

It's valuable because it helps people make better decisions.

Unfortunately, many dashboards become collections of charts that are rarely used after they're launched.

So what separates a useful dashboard from one that's ignored?

Start With Business Questions

Before designing any dashboard, ask:

  • What decisions will this support?

  • Who will be using it?

  • What information do they need immediately?

The answers should determine what appears on the dashboard.

Focus on Key Metrics

More charts don't create more value.

A management dashboard should highlight the KPIs that matter most, allowing users to quickly understand business performance.

Additional detail should be available through drill-downs rather than displayed all at once.

Show Trends, Not Just Numbers

Knowing this month's sales figure is useful.

Knowing how it compares with previous months, budgets, or targets is even more valuable.

Context turns data into insight.

Make It Easy to Explore

Different users often need different levels of detail.

Interactive dashboards allow users to filter data, compare performance across regions or products, and investigate areas that require attention.

The goal isn't simply to report information—it's to help management take action.
